Most of the top salsa dancers started dancing from an early age. Some start as gymnasts, jazz, or tap dancers and then switch to salsa dancing in their teen or early adult years.
Gymnasts and dancers commonly can adjust to salsa dancing easier than most because they have already build a tolerance for rigorous training. Jumps and tumbles of gymnastics are very similar to the lift moves practiced in salsa dance. Also similar is the rhythmic choreography of jazz and tap which greatly aids to the salsa dance style.
